I ADVISORY BODY

The State Attorney-General Chambers (SAGC) aims to provide excellent advice and legal opinion to the State and state government agencies, giving legal assistance in execution of projects and Government decision-making. The SAGC also provides advice in the changing area of land development under the Native Customary Rights and state civil service commission matters.

 

II DRAFTING

SAGC also enacts laws, subsidiary legislations and Government contracts. SAGC play an active role in updating and revising the states' laws to ensure the current laws are in tandem with the fast-paced changes of the world economy, societal shifts and political senses. SAGC also acts a translator for existing laws in the national language, reprinting and editing the State's Government Gazette (Chapter I-IV).

 

III LITIGATION AND ARBITRATION

The SAGC and the State Legal Officers represent the Government in the courts, arbitration cases and for any course of legal action initiated against the State.

 

IV UPHOLD THE LAWS

Serving as an agent for the State, SAGC enforces all current and existing laws. Supervision, monitoring and training for better enforcement duties within the state enforcement officers are amongst the Agency's exemplary aims. In addition, the SAGC provides guidelines and gives advice on prevention efforts.

 

V GENERAL CONTROL OF THE LEGAL PROFESSION IN SARAWAK

Under the Advocates Rules (Inquiry Committee) 1988, SAGC will direct on all necessary actions to be taken by the committee and any complaints made against any legal practitioners in Sarawak. SAGC also reserve the rights and prerogatives to accept signed petitions including the registration of lawyers to practice in the state as well as to dismiss petitions for non-eligible individuals required by the registration.
